Mayor Opens Hide in West Byron Wetlands

Mayor Jan Barham did the honours recently by opening the newly constructed hide at the West Byron Wetlands. The opening of the hide was part of an event organised by Byron Bird Buddies, Brunswick Valley Landcare and Byron Shire Council to highlight the value of this award winning site.

“This project is an ongoing example of how the triple bottom line of economy, environment and societal values can be achieved” commented the Mayor as she invited the public to enjoy the viewing opportunities provided by the new hide, "it is also a fine example of what can be done when community groups and council work together".

The West Byron Wetlands is now a major site for wading birds in the area and many species of resident and migratory species use the area. Visitors were taken on guided walks of the site by members of the Byron Bird Buddies who helped with bird identification and provided intriguing insights into the life cycles of the varied species.
