the route of the pacific highway across the floodplain of the clarence river, known as wells crossing to iluka road, threatens a rare population of coastal emus.

Highway upgrade threatens coastal emu

In June, NSW Roads Minister Roozendaal has to decide whether to push a new 60km long, 100m wide 4/6 lane Motorway through high-value fauna habitat and Endangered Ecological Communities east of Grafton, or instead use the existing highway route, or maybe the Summerland Way corridor. In a flash of common sense (or dire economic straits) he may even opt for safety upgrades and village bypasses rather than a Motorway.

Time is short, and it would be counterproductive to send the petition to the Minister with less than 2000 signatures. So far, less than 200 in 2 weeks. If you have not already done so, please forward this to your members for consideration.

Please sign our online petition to save the Eastern Coastal Emu, symbolic of the 100+ other threatened species in this undeveloped area, from fragmentation and destruction.

Our petition's host, petitiononline.com, will not send you spam emails and will not sell your email address to anyone else.
You will be given the choice of making your email address Private, or (preferred) "available to petition author" (or Public if you're a masochist).
The petition will be more impressive if there are email addresses with your names when I print them and send them to the minister.
I'm not going to do anything else with them. The minister may reply to you by email, but I doubt his besieged office has time for that!
You can always create an easily-deleted email alias (see "Your Account" or similar on your ISP's website) if you're still worried.

Please add comments when you sign, such as:

  • Keep the highway on the highway!
  • Safety Upgrades Now, not motorways in 10 years!
  • Rail not Road!
  • the effect of building/using motorways on Climate Change
  • the effect of Climate Change on road transport/motorway usage
  • the effect of Peak Oil on road transport/motorway usage
  • the evils of PPPs, tollways etc
