Local Kayaker Steve Posselt is undertaking another great journey to highlight the threat facing the Mary River with the building of the Traveston Crossing Dam. Steve has done a number of trips before, most notably a journey down the Darling and Murray Rivers, to highlight the degraded state of Australian rivers and the need for governments to act to protect them. This time he is paddling from Brisbane to Sydney to present a petition to the office of the Environment Minister Peter Garrett. The timetable for his journey will beSaturday 4th Oct Depart West End boat ramp. Tuesday 7th Oct Gold Coast Thursday 9th Oct Byron Bay Friday 10th Oct Ballina Saturday 11th Oct Evans Head Sunday 12th Oct Yamba Monday 13th Oct Minnie Water Wednesday 15th Oct Coffs Harbour Friday 17th Oct Nambucca Heads Saturday 18th Oct South West Rocks Monday 19th Oct Port Macquarie Wednesday 22nd Oct Start into coastal lakes at Forster Walk between Pacific Palms and Myall Lakes . Use this as a trial and see how hopping between lakes works Sunday 26th Oct Newcastle (John Crocker takes over support role) Wednesday 29th Oct Gosford (To do Gosford, need to walk between Tuggera Lakes and Brisbane Waters) Saturday 1st November Sydney Opera House You can find out more about Peter and his work at http://www.kayak4earth.com/ The decision to build Traveston Crossing Dam was political. No detailed investigation of alternatives was undertaken. This should be an affront to all thinking people. Professionals were excluded from the process until after the political decision was made. The dam is expensive, unnecessary, a major contributor of greenhouse gases, destroyer of valuable resources, and obliterates a world significant lungfish breeding habitat. The lungfish is older than the dinosaurs. It is the link from the sea to the land – probably the most important living evidence of our evolutionary history. What sort of vandal would seek to destroy this? |
