Jan Barham to run for Mayor in Byron shire Council Elections 2008

Byron Ballina Greens announced today that Jan Barham will again be their candidate for mayor of Byron Shire in the upcoming local government elections.

If successful this will be Jan's second term as mayor after being elected in 2004 and after spending four years as a councillor.

'Local government faces great challenges', says mayor Jan Barham, 'as the State Government takes over many of the planning powers of previously reserved for council, while at the same time restricting council's ability to raise money.'

'It is now more important than ever that the community has strong and experienced leadership to protect the rights of residents, provide a sustainable planning system, deliver on key infrastructure, support the community and retain a focus on climate change.' said Jan.

She will be joined on the Greens ticket by a group of enthusiastic candidates who will work closely with her in implementing Greens policies.
