Queensland's First Greens Senator Resolves to protect farmland
Bob Brown with Larissa Waters Greens senator elect for Queensland
Larissa Waters the first Greens Senator for Queensland, has signalled her
intention to protect Queensland's most productive farmland .
Larissa, said she would protect farmland where it is at risk from new
multi-billion-dollar gas-to-LNG projects and other extractive resources
industries.
Larissa Waters is an environmental lawyer who has worked in the community
sector for eight years advising people how to use the law to protect
Queensland’s environment.
Ms Waters said protection of the agricultural food bowl would be one of her priorities in the Senate, along with climate change and protection of the Great Barrier Reef, and she foreshadowed plans to amend federal environmental laws to benefit farmers.
Expressions of concern from Ms Waters over food production in Queensland were raised during her visit to an organic food market in inner Brisbane, humming with Greens supporters still on a high after the party's best results in a federal election.
Larissa grew up in Brisbane and lives in Bardon with her partner and their young daughter.
She is passionate about human rights, protecting our environment and public participation and accountability in government.
Larissa narrowly missed out on becoming Queensland’s first Greens Senator in 2007. In 2010 she has a strong chance of representing Queenslanders who want a fairer and more sustainable Australia.
