Greens keen to meet anglers on Marine Park

Greens Richmond Candidate, Joe Ebono, called for an honest discussion about marine reserves. Mr Ebono said that the experience on the South Coast of NSW is that recreational anglers and fishing magazines love the marine park.

He said: “Marine reserves have been demonstrated to support biodiversity and improve fish numbers and sizes in surrounding waters. Reserves serve an important role in managing our marine resources.

Joe Ebono will attend the rally in Tweed Heads tomorrow.
Time: 9am Jack Evans Boat Harbour, Bay St Tweed Hds

I have invited people to “Grill a Green” since the election was called. Tomorrow may bring that on,” he joked.

“The Greens pledge to work with recreational and commercial fishers as well as scientists to ensure NSW's marine reserves serve the environment and the community.

"NSW maritime waters contribute a significant amount to the state's economy through recreational and commercial fishing and as well as tourism. A robust network of marine reserves is important for protecting the future of these industries.

"The majority of the areas within marine reserves are general use areas that allow for recreational fishing. Less than 7% of NSW marine waters are covered by 'no take' zones.

“A blanket approach to halt the declaration of marine parks is not the right one. Many fish stocks remain under pressure and marine biodiversity is declining. Being candid about these facts is an important starting point in this debate.

"The Greens are working hard to ensure that Australia has a sustainable future and regulating the marine environment protects everyone's interests. We want to work with coastal communities to make sure the right balance is struck to guarantee the long-term viability of marine industries and the health of the state's oceans.

“This is not a decision that politicians should be divided on.  Protecting marine biodiversity is a win win for fishermen, coastal communities and the environment," said Mr Ebono.
