A new day has dawned for Byron Shire as a group of progressive councillors has taken the majority of seats on Council. This should signal the beginning of a period of clear and positive policy direction for the Shire.

With Greens Mayor Jan Barham, the new Council will consist of a solid group of six progressive councillors made up of four Greens, one from Our Sustainable Future and one from another group who also campaigned on issues of sustainable development, environmental responsibility and community consultation.

For the past four years the number of progressives and conservatives was finally balanced resulting in the use of the Mayor's casting vote, the putting forward of recission motions, and in the end a certain amount of animosity and uncertainty.

The final results from the NSW Electoral Office is listed below.  The four Greens are, Barham, Richardson, Tabart and Staples. Patrick Morrisey and Bail Cameron are councillors who campaigned on issues that would be familiar to most Greens and seen by many to people the the Green councillors will be able to from a good working relationship with. The three conservaties are Tucker, Heeson and Woods and all being on the same ticket will form a strong vocal conservative minority.
