Byron Ballina Greens -> media -> NSWGreensFuturesNSW Greens Discuss Their Future.A group of Bryon Ballina Greens travelled to Sydney recently to attend the NSW Greens Futures Conference. This was just the second time in 10 years that such a get together had been held and the topics for discussions were a real testament to how much the party has progressed. Some of the themes on the agenda included “Getting Our House in Order”, “Solving the Big Issues” and “Getting Our Message Out”. The participants broke into groups and over three sessions worked through a range of topics within these themes. 'It demonstrates real growth and real depth in the party that we are now discussing topics such as “What to do with a balance of power” or “What do you do when your group gets to big”', commented one participant. The conference halls were situated in beautiful surroundings at Port Hacking in the Royal National Park on the southern fringes of Sydney. This natural heritage backdrop was a constant reminder of the importance of the deliberations and the importance of making sure that the Greens continue to grow and prosper into the future. The conference was not only a chance to discuss future directions for the Greens, it was also an opportunity for newer members to get to meet each other and for members from across the state to discuss day to day issues and come to an understanding of how different groups function and to discover best practise. Keynote speeches were given by Senator Kerry Nettle and Professor Frank Stillwell. Kerry, who was into her final weeks as a Senator was upbeat about the future of the Greens and its role in the community and the parliaments of the nation. Frank spoke positively about the fact that, contrary to general opinion, the Greens economic policy were the most realistic of all the current parties because they were the only ones that took the concept of the triple bottom line seriously. Further reports from the Futures Conference will be made available here as they become available. |
