Greens endorse Andrea Vickers as state candidate for Tweed

Well-known community member Andrea Vickers will contest the New South Wales state election on March 26th on behalf of the Tweed Greens. Campaign Coordinator, Terry Morgan, says members are thrilled to be fielding a candidate with Andrea’s credentials.

“Andrea will bring to the campaign a successful political background, plans for a sustainable future, and on-the-ground experience in social issues,” Mr Morgan said. “Andrea is astute and energetic, a woman who is passionate about local and world issues. She has a proven ability to translate ideas into action.”

Ms Vickers, an educational disability assistant, has a track record in working to support community friendly development in Tweed. Many locals will also know her through her roles in the successful No Rally and Save Byrrill Creek campaigns, and the recently established Northern Rivers Guardians, a broadly based organisation which aims to protect the Tweed region from excessive and poorly planned development.

Regarding her public opposition to the Repco Rally and the Byrrill Creek Dam proposal, Ms Vickers said, “I’m not opposed to development at all, just those projects that threaten the special environment and lifestyle we enjoy here in Tweed.”

“Economic development is essential, but that doesn’t mean anything goes. I think most people in Tweed want to live on the green coast, not the Gold Coast,” Ms Vickers said.

“Key issues in Tweed for this election include coastal erosion, water management and making sure the community has a say about big developments like Kings Forest and Cobaki.”

“I’m committed to helping the Tweed develop towards a sustainable economy. I’m committed to helping all Tweed residents to have a voice on issues that affect us, and determine the kind of place our children and grandchildren will inherit.”

‘The Greens heed the urgency of climate change and the need to create a safe future. We're running out of time to limit the damage."

“A choice between the two major parties is a no-win situation,” Mr Morgan said. “Voters understand the value of The Greens as a balancing force in the two-party system. You can use your vote to send a message that you want action on planning controls, climate change, and accountable decision making.”

“In the Upper House, your vote translates into Greens MPs who can stop the excesses of majority government. Your vote’s worth more when you vote Green.”

“The Greens are the only political party that won’t accept donations from property developers and large corporations. We’re not beholden to powerful, wealthy donors. We work purely for the interests of the community and the environment.”

Andrea will officially launch her campaign in February. “I’m keen to discuss the issues, meet people in Tweed, and listen to their concerns,” she said.

Andrea can be contacted on 0415 612 469.
