The Train Returns to Byron

The Train Returns to Byron

A train will pull into Byron Bay Railway Station for the first time in two years on Friday, 23 February at 10 am. Whistles will blow, passengers will alight, and the people of Byron will celebrate on the platform.
Sadly not the real train, only a mock up train built by members of the Byron/Ballina Greens to highlight, as the election approaches, that the community want the Casino to Murwillumbah railway back and running.

John Kaye, the Greens candidate for the NSW Upper House, will be there to greet the train. “The Carr/Iemma government has ripped the heart out of rural rail,” John said. “Around NSW, rural branch lines are closing or in decay. And major lines are in poor condition.”

John Bailey, Greens candidate for Ballina believes “A regular and convenient commuter rail service should be introduced on the restored line. The rail network should be extended to Queensland. A commuter service right into the heart of Brisbane would reduce road traffic into Byron and be a boon to small business and the tourist industry in the villages and towns of our area.”

In 2000, the government gave B-Doubles trucks access to the entire length of the Pacific Highway for transporting freight. “The Greens are committed to affordable, efficient and safe public transport” said John Bailey.

“I encourage everyone to join The Greens at Byron Station so we can get this message through to the State Government and the Opposition"

Local lobby group, Trains on our Tracks (TOOT), has done extensive research and come up with a plan for a commuter service that would be better and cheaper than the inadequate and badly timetabled bus service the government currently provides.
Come and meet your Green candidates, John Kaye & John Bailey and Andy Gough from Lismore.
Join The Greens and TOOT at Byron Station Friday 23 February at 10am.
