Local Greens Support Youth Service With Carbon Offsets

Members of the Byron-Ballina Greens decided this week to support the Byron Youth Service and offset carbon emissions created by members traveling to official Greens events.

This decision formalises decisions made earlier by Greens at the state level to offset travel to meetings.

The Byron Youth Service’s Carbon Neutral project was chosen over other offset schemes because it was both local and could be easily monitored. This project involves regular tree planting in combination with other energy and water conservation activities.

Carbon offseting is the act of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in one place to make up for emissions produced somewhere else. A wide variety of offset methods are in use — while tree planting has initially been a mainstay of carbon offsetting, renewable energy and energy conservation have also become increasingly popular.

The cost of offsetting a return trip by air from the North Coast to Sydney is about $10.00
