Melting Glacier Sends Urgent Signal for Carbon Tax

Melting Glacier Sends Urgent Signal for Carbon Tax

The piece of ice 250 square kilometres in area and 200 metres thick that fell of the Pederson Glacier in Greenland today is a shocking reminder of the dramatic impact that climate change is having on the planet.

This is in the same week that the people of Moscow are fleeing from smoke caused by bushfires in the hottest summer on record.

If ever there was a reminder to the world's governments that immediate action on global warming is required, this is it.

The Greens have a simple policy to act on Australia's carbon emissions and that is to put a price on carbon, immediately. This will boost the investment in renewable energy and speed up the process of shifting our economy from its reliance on cheap oil, to a sustainable future. No complex emissions trading schemes, no compensation for polluters and enough new revenue to fund the compensation for those workers and small businesses harmed by rising prices. Energy prices are increasing anyway, all the carbon tax does is make old polluting energy more expensive faster and new renewable energy cheaper more quickly.

People complain that no action by the Australian government can reduce the temperature of the globe. That's true, but unless all government's act, there is no hope that we can get control of the problem. It is up to the richest countries in the world to lead the way. Governments may have to use tarrifs and trade agreements to penalise those countries that do not address their greenhouse emissions and create a level playing field.

12,000 people in Richmond voted for The Greens in the last election, and others voted for the Labor party, because they wanted action on climate change. After three years of delay, changes in direction and postponement, the only choice is to elect The Greens.
Vote 1 for me, Joe Ebono, in Richmond and for Lee Rhiannon in the Senate. On August 21, vote 1 The Greens.
